Dimsum Break (SM North Edsa)

Bf got a Dimsum Break gift certificate from Badudets last Christmas. Of course I tagged along when he redeemed it because...food! We enjoyed our first visit so when we came back to SM North a few weeks later, I suggested we dine at Dimsum Break again. This review covers our two visits.

Dimsum Break SM North EDSA Annex

Dimsum Break offers fried dim sum, steamed dimsum, rice pots, vegetables, noodles, soups, shaopao (siopao), desserts, and beverages.

Taste

So far we have tried the following Dimsum Break items: Bacon Shaomai (siomai), Shaomai, Quail's Egg Shaomai, Empress Roll, Mushroom Shaomai, Crab Pincers, Stuffed Shrimps, The Original Steamed Fried Rice, Beef Sate Noodles, and Lomi.

The steamed dimsum we had (bacon shaomai, shaomai, quail's egg shaomai, empress roll, and mushroom shaomai) came in two or three pieces per kind. Except for the shaomai, they were placed in saucers with a little water instead of directly on the steamer basket. I was not impressed with the shaomai but I liked the others. They were all meaty, juicy, and yummy.

Movie Review: The Elephant Man (1980 Drama Film Based on a True Story)

The Elephant Man is a 1980 movie by David Lynch. This was his second movie (the first being Eraserhead) and his first commercial one. The film is in black-and-white and tells the story of a real-life 19th century man named Joseph Merrick.

Synopsis:
The Victorian doctor Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) hears about a severely deformed young man named John Merrick (John Hurt) working at a freak show. This man is called the Elephant Man since some people believe that his appearance is due to his pregnant mother being knocked over by an elephant. Treves pays the show's owner Bytes (Freddie Jones) so that he can examine and use Merrick at a medical presentation. The deformed man is so odd-looking that he has to wear a hood and those who see him flee in terror. After learning that Bytes is abusive towards Merrick, Treves hides Merrick in one of the hospital's isolated rooms. When the hospital's governor Carr Gomm (John Gielgud) finds out about Merrick staying at the hospital, Treves tries in vain to convince him that Merrick can speak and understand. Gomm changes his mind when Merrick suddenly displays his literacy and intelligence. The famous theater actress Mrs. Kendal (Anne Bancroft) learns about Merrick and seeks to meet him, urging other rich people to want to meet him as well. Meanwhile, a money-grubbing night watchman decides to earn extra cash by letting people in to see and harass Merrick.

Main Cast:
Anthony Hopkins - Dr. Frederick Treves
John Hurt - John Merrick
Anne Bancroft - Mrs. Kendal
John Gielgud - Carr Gomm

Wanchai at Lucky Chinatown Mall

We dropped by Wanchai for a light late-afternoon snack. Wanchai is a small Chinese restaurant in the Food Junction (small food court) of Lucky Chinatown Mall. I haven't been to their other branches but as far as I know, their other branches are full-sized restaurants while the one in Lucky Chinatown is more of a food stall with a limited menu.

This "express edition" foodie place serves dimsum (P60-85), congee (P110-P120), noodles (P120-P135), rice meals (P120), and rice bowls (P55).

Larry & Mau Diner (Eton Centris, QC)

Larry & Mau diner is a 24-hour self-service restaurant in ETON Centris Walk. This diner serves burgers, rice meals, meats, tortes, spaghetti, salads, desserts, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Taste

Our group ordered the following: Fish Curry Sambal, Sizzling Sisig, Smoked Boiled Bacon, Seafood Marinara Spaghetti, Fries, Banoffee, and Chocolate Mousse.

The dishes were served in individual bowls and plates. I only got to taste the seafood marinara, fries, choco mousse (my order), and smoked boiled bacon (bf's order) since I felt that it would be improper for me to mess with the food of the other people in our group, given that the servings were good for one only. For those other food, I only have my groupmates' feedback.

Movie Review: Sleeping Beauty (2011 Drama)

Sleeping Beauty was an entry in the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. It was the directorial debut of the novelist Julia Leigh, who also wrote the screenplay for the dramatic movie.

Synopsis:
Lucy is a beautiful but aloof college student who has several odd jobs. She works at a coffee shop, as well as a human test subject at a research center and as an office clerk. She goes to a bar to drink, pick up sex partners, and occasionally do drugs. Every now and then she visits her good (and seemingly only) friend Birdman. Lucy responds to an advertisement and begins working for a mysterious employer named Clara who gives her a new name, Sarah. First, she serves food in a fancy dinner while wearing white lingerie, looking virginal and fragile compared to the other girls who are taller and black-haired and who wear black lingerie and extreme make-up. She then gets a new assignment from Clara: being drugged into a deep sleep while rich old men do what they want with her naked body.

Main Cast
Emily Browning - Lucy
Rachael Blake - Clara
Ewen Leslie - Birdmann
Peter Carroll - Man 1

Chowking's Wintermelon Pearl Milk Tea

I finally got to try Wintermelon Pearl Milk Tea at Chowking Araneta Square last month. The product seemed like the resto just getting on the wintermelon milk tea craze that's sweeping the country, but I've loved Chowking's Naicha since that one came out on the market, so Chowking's new milk tea was a welcomed move for me.

The wintermelon milk tea I got looked promising due to the nice creamy froth on top. The rest of the drink was lackluster though. The milk tea was not sweet enough and did not taste much like tea. It did not taste much like anything, actually, and gave me the impression that it was very much watered down. The pearls were just ordinary, not the chewy and sticky ones that are enjoyable to eat.

I wished that I had just ordered nai cha.
